Though the news is a bit late in being reported on, throughout the month of August, Marvel had teamed up with
Minor League Baseball to create comics centered around the sport of baseball that were given away to fans on special days by each of the 30 teams in the International and Pacific Coast Leagues of Triple-A.
The first batch was officially given away in Fresno, California on August 3, and ended on September 2 in both Portland, Michigan and Richmond, Virginia. The comic, titled Triple-A Baseball Heroes, was edited by Nicole Boose, written by Chris Eliopoulos, and drawn by Robert Atkins. The story revolves around the Triple-A All-Star game being held in Albuquerque, New Mexico that is being attended by Marvels mightiest heroes. According to Eliopoulous, the "Fantastic Four is known as a family, and a ballgame is great family fun. Spider-Man's Aunt May brought in the idea of the timelessness of the game, and the Hulk, everyone knows, goes from city to city finding a job, and working in a stadium seemed like a good fit." Of course, things heat up quickly as an "evildoer creates a situation that leads to a horrible misunderstanding. Chaos ensues. And singing. Really."
Besides the main cover by Atkins that will be feature at 27 of the parks, three special variants, done by John Watson were each be separately given away in Buffalo, Durham and Memphis. Also, all the covers were embossed with each team's logo for their particular city.
Editors Note: Curiously, Marvel posted this news on August 30, which was only three days before the MLB source article said the last day would be September 2.
